The hidden science of cosmetics

No to fear marketing. No to alarmist headlines that create panic. And enough with the gurus. To really know whether a cosmetic is good or bad for you, you need to get informed, starting from reliable, verified sources. For fear to fade, we need transparency, which means finding out what is really inside a big brand’s product, who makes it and how. The author offers no simple solutions to complex problems, no shortcuts and no advice on how to behave. The opposite of “bad for you” is not “good for you”, but “not bad for you”. We’ll find out how to choose, on our own, the best cosmetics for our needs. With Beatrice Mautino Moderated by Marcello Pagliari

  • Water, Air, Fire and Earth: a superhero showdown!

In ancient times the “four elements” were associated with deities, spirits able to bring order to the chaos of the World. Great thinkers and scientists such as Thales, Aristotle and Pythagoras saw them as bearers of important symbolism. Today, thanks to the progress of science, we know that they are essential for the birth and flourishing of Life on our Planet, but they also hold properties and “peculiarities” that often escape the human eye. In the Science Show “Water, Air, Fire and Earth!” they will turn into four superheroes and take each other on through a series of experiments to decide who is the strongest. Find out with us!! By Massimo Ruccio and Mariangela D’Aquino, Le Nuvole

Where is the universe heading?

Everyone knows the Universe was born from a big bang, but there never was a real bang. So what was the thing we call the Big Bang? Nothing more than an incredible, extremely fast expansion that set time and space in motion, giving rise to the fabric we call spacetime, the natural playground of stars and planets but also of incredible objects such as black holes. It is a fabric that is anything but monotonous, and if there is a way to travel in time, this is exactly where we should look for it. Exploring the universe is an endless adventure: a real race against time and space. With Fernando Ferroni, professor of physics at GSSI and researcher at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of INFN.

Put your beliefs to the test and learn to spot health hoaxes. Doubts, questions and uncertainties: how can you tell which information is really reliable in the internet age? Miracle foods, vaccine conspiracies, alien sightings: every day we are bombarded with news popping up from every corner of the web, which unfortunately sometimes has no scientific basis at all. For everyday wellbeing, it hardly matters whether aliens exist or not, but when it comes to our health, things get more serious. Does the alkaline diet cure cancer? Are vaccines safe? Is deodorant carcinogenic? And talcum powder? These are just some of the questions we will try to answer with the help of the scientific method. Thanks to an interactive, experiential workshop, the public will learn to evaluate sources of information, gaining tools of judgement to use in everyday life.

#waterchallenge contest

Contest award ceremony in collaboration with VivaServizi

Water Challenge

A challenge for children and young people to understand the difference between floating and surface tension. Participants must submit a photograph showing the most creative version possible of the experiment “Paper clips on the surface of the water”. Surface tension is a characteristic of many liquids. Molecules tend to attract one another. A molecule inside the liquid is surrounded by other molecules and is pulled in all directions. The molecules at the surface, however, are only attracted by the molecules below them. That is why they form a kind of film. Thanks to this property, some insects can walk on water without sinking. If you want some inspiration, at the bottom of this page you’ll find a very useful infographic.

How to take part

Taking part is very easy: MAKE your version of the Water Challenge, SEND the photo to info@didatticaviva.it or to the Didatticaviva.it Facebook page by 17 July 2021, WIN a 10″ tablet or a set of books to keep on experimenting. We will collect all the entries we receive and publish them on our Facebook page.

who wins and what

On Monday 19 July, from the fosforo: stage, two drawings will be awarded prizes: The drawing that gets the most “Likes” ?? on the “didatticaviva.it” Facebook page The drawing judged the most creative by the VivaServizi art committee The authors of the two winning drawings will receive a 10″ tablet and a science book written by fosforo: and published by National Geographic Kids
