Engineering

In Engineering activities, young people face an engineering problem that they have to solve – before turning to calculations and the laws of maths and physics – by using their ingenuity, trying and trying again until they work out for themselves which techniques are best suited.

During the sessions, the science communicator will give participants a goal to reach, helping them use their imagination to find the best way to get there with just a few materials. Participants will therefore also be encouraged to learn to adapt and to work together with others when needed. The science communicator will bring all the materials needed for the activity.

  • Bridges and structures

There are many techniques for building a bridge, but all bridges follow precise physical laws so they don’t collapse. Let’s try building a bridge and testing how much weight it can hold: the results might really surprise us!

  • Cranky Contraptions

“Kronk, pull the lever. The other lever!” In this tinkering activity there are no right or wrong levers like in the famous cartoon: there are only levers and cranks to fit together, assemble and set moving in sync!

  • Climb the ramp

A handful of parts at your disposal and a gauntlet thrown down. Can you build a contraption that climbs up a ramp? All without instructions? Creativity, simplicity and plenty of testing are the ingredients for success.

  • Crazy wheels

Wheels, cogs and imagination. An exciting challenge to design, build and test the most efficient contraptions to roll down a ramp. A workshop where “wrong” doesn’t mean incorrect, but “an attempt”.

  • Slat upon slat

Lots of identical pieces of wood, no instructions, just one goal: build a structure that can stand on its own without any glue or nails!
