How to play

The rules of the game are just two, and very simple:

1. You can only move the disc at the top of a tower.

2. A larger disc cannot be placed on top of a smaller disc.

The aim is to move all the discs onto another rod so that they end up arranged in the same order.

The maths

What to do:

The player’s skill lies in completing the task in the smallest number of moves possible.

Try playing with 1, 2 and 3 discs and write down in each case the minimum number of moves needed. Then keep increasing the number of discs and record the results in a table. Also try to describe the strategy to follow each time to achieve the minimum number of moves.

How to start:

The player’s skill consists in carrying out the required operation in the minimum number of possible moves. Try to play with 1, with 2, with 3 discs and write in each case what is the minimum number of moves to make. Then increase the number of discs again and note the results obtained in a table. Also try to describe the strategy you have to follow from time to time to get the minimum number of moves.
